Fantasy Future

Posted by: Caroline on: July 4, 2008

As many of you are aware, my ultimate wish would be to run my own tea rooms. Real, traditional English tea rooms in which I would serve real afternoon teas complete with cucumber sandwiches, clotted cream and jam scones, multi-layered Victoria sponges with fresh strawberries and thick whipped local cream and tea served in china teapots. I have always believed I’d like to serve this up on traditional china, but mismatched to add a modern (and recycled) twist. Which is why, if I ever get this idea off the ground I would love to feature some of Esther Coombs’ amazing designs. Just check out her Etsy shop – traditional pieces with a perfect updated edge! I’m currently coveting this piece (image taken from the shop pages):

It’s beautiful!

My friend once gave me a set of mismatched teacups. They are all clear glass, but in different ornate shapes.

Excuse my ignorance, I am an American, but what is clotted cream?

Ooh, they sound lovely!

Clotted cream is a very thick, indulgent and high fat cream (minimum 55 per cent) famously produced in Cornwall and served as part of Devon Cream Teas. It is so called because it has been heated until it forms sort of buttery or cream-cheesy clots. In cream tea it is spread on warm scones instead of butter, and dolloped with jam. It is an indulgent but utterly delicious traditional treat!

The best I ever had was on holiday with friends in Devon a couple of years ago. A few of the girls and I booked in for a pony trek across Exmoor, then found a delightful, middle-of-nowhere town with a tearoom. I had an alternative take on traditional tea in which the cream was infused with ginger, and instead of jam they served Exmoor honey. It was just amazing!

Sounds delicious.
